This family. Where do I even start? I have been photographing them for over a decade and we've been friends even longer than that.

(flashback circa 2011)

You might recognize their names or faces. They've been dubbed the "kindness brokers" here in Oregon City and I think the name fits them perfectly.

Johnson2017 (20)Johnson2017 (20)

About 5 years ago, Tom and Brandi joined up with an amazing man named Dave McAdams who was providing clean laundry, love, and hope to neighbors in need through a nonprofit he started called LaundryLove Milwaukie. A few years later they decided to change the name of the nonprofit to LoveOne, to better encompass their mission of loving one person, one family and one community at a time through clean laundry, personal care resources and community connection. Those were the tangible needs being met, but Dave's heart and love for others made it so much more. Sadly, Dave lost his battle with cancer in January of this year and left a huge hole in the hearts of many people. I only knew Dave for a short time but his love was contagious and I know I'm not the only one who feels like I'm a better person having met him.

DaveTheLocalDaveTheLocal

Brandi knew she had some enormous shoes to fill when she took over the executive director position from Dave last fall, but the LoveOne board and volunteers already knew she was the right one for the job. Her and Tom's genuine love for people, their desire and commitment to serve their community, and the love they have for their neighbors and friends is insurmountable.

Dave&BrandiDave&Brandi

I joined the LoveOne team of volunteers a little over a year ago, so not only do I get to read her encouraging posts on social media every time they hold an event, I also get to witness first hand the kindness and sense of community and belonging that is created at each of the laundry events that they facilitate.

If you'd like to read more about what LoveOne does and how it impacts our community,

you can check out some of our event updates here:

LoveOne Community Blog

Since the Johnson's lives are so full of laundry these days, I though it would be fun to take their family photos in a laundry mat, and I absolutely love how they turned out.

Their smiles are contagious as is their love for people. Spend even a small amount of time with them and you'll know what I mean. They are self-less and giving, generous with their time and resources, and as I mentioned in the beginning, they are "brokers of kindness".

They have a gift for matching peoples needs with the generosity of the community around them. I've seen them rally their friends and neighbors to provide clothing, gas, groceries, and many other resources to local neighbors in need.

You, our community, has come together to provide steel toed boots, pillows and blankets, food and countless other resources to meet specific needs of the people who call this area home.  Local businesses have volunteered to donate auto repair, furnace repair, and hair care when our neighbors have needed it the most.

Tom and Brandi, thank you for all that you do to serve our community and make the world a better place. I am honored to call you lifelong friends and to serve along side you.

If you would like to help spread the kindness, or possibly sponsor a night of laundry, head on over to our support page to check out the many opportunities we have for you to be involved:

Witch's Castle - Portland, Oregon https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2019/10/witchs-castle---portland-oregon I stumbled upon this location on Pinterest last month and knew I wanted to check it out. One of my lovely high school seniors that I photographed over the summer offered to come on the adventure with me, and hiked a half a mile in this beautiful dress in order to capture these stunning images.

Jason & Amanda Reece https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2019/9/jason-amanda-reece I had the absolute privilege of photographing this amazing couple a few weeks ago. Their faith and trust in God has truly been a blessing for me to witness.

Two years ago, a house fire should have claimed their lives. But by the power of prayer and the grace of God, they are alive today to tell their truly miraculous story of Gods provision and supernatural healing in their lives. They were recently featured on the 700 Club so if you'd like to see more of their story, I'll post the link below. Amanda is also working on a book that will go into more detail about all the ways that the Lord provided for them throughout this horrific journey. God has great things in store for their future and I know that their story is going to touch the lives of many, many people and help build faith and hope in a world that is hurting.

Here are some images from my session with them. I knew I needed an epic location to highlight the magnitude of their love for each other and for the Lord. We drove about an hour up into the mountains outside of Molalla, Oregon (Amanda's hometown) to capture these stunning sunset views.

DSC_3547DSC_3547 DSC_3559DSC_3559

Jason had 3rd degree burns on more than 93% of his body. The doctors did not think he would live through the night. They thought he would spend upwards of two years in the burn unit if he did survive. But 2 months to the day after the fire, Jason walked out of the hospital.

"Nothing missing, nothing broken" just like Amanda had spoken over him from the very beginning. His healing has truly been miraculous and although they will always have the scars, I know their faith is stronger, their love for each other is stronger, and what satan meant to steal from them, God is using for His glory.

DSC_3641DSC_3641 DSC_3702DSC_3702

Jason and Amanda, thank you for blessing me with the opportunity to document your love for each other in photographs. It is a pleasure and an honor to call you friends and I'm so excited to continue to watch your journey unfold. You have such a powerful testimony and I can't wait to see how God is going to bless you as you spread His good news to others.

How Chiropractic Care Saved My Career https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2019/7/complete-health-chiropractic Photography has always been my passion, so you can imagine my devastation when my back and neck pain became so severe that I had to all but stop booking sessions with clients.

Last year at this time, I was hardly able to book any photo shoots. Carrying my equipment around for 6 - 8 hours during a wedding could put me out of commission for weeks. It was depressing, to say the least, but I didn't know what I should do. I had seen chiropractors in the past, but they seemed to focus on alleviating the symptoms temporarily, not focusing on long term health and wellness.

I found Dr. Jennifer Pitcairn through a referral from another friend of mine in the wellness industry (Amy in Your Kitchen - for those of you that follow me, you've probably seen the delicious food pictures I've posted of hers over the years.)

Dr. Jennifer PitcairnDr. Jennifer PitcairnDr. Jennifer Pitcairn of Complete Health Chiropractic in Oregon City

From the first time I visited the office and met Dr. Pitcairn and her staff, I could tell that this was the type of office I had been looking for. She took the time to get to know me, and not just through paperwork and medical history, but through individual conversation, as well as body scans of the nervous system and x-rays. Her goal is to promote health and balance in the body, not just through chiropractic adjustments, but also through nutrition, supplements, exercise, and education.

I committed to a 12 month treatment plan with Dr. Jennifer and as I near the end of this year long journey, I can honestly say that my body feels so much better than it did a year ago. Weekly headaches and migraines are a thing of the past. My body feels looser and more aligned and I'm finally able to book photo sessions again without worrying about the pain I might be in afterwords.

During the course of my treatment, I've had the pleasure of photographing both her staff and her family.

Her business is female owned and operated, which as a female business owner myself, I think is super cool.

All the women in her office are so kind and helpful and seem to genuinely care about the well-being of their clients. Karen at the front desk has always remembered my name and she is always friendly and upbeat when I come to the office. She does an excellent job keeping the schedule for the office and I'm sure she does lots of other amazing things too that I am not aware of.

Kelly is the office manager and has been with Dr. Pitcairn for 18 years now I think! She assists  Dr. Pitcairn with scans of the nervous system, x-rays and just helps the office to run smoothly.

The office also has an in house massage therapist. Jenn Baldwin has been practicing for over 7 years and she uses a range of techniques to address both acute and chronic injuries. She uses a combination of deep tissue massage, hot stones, and myofascial release to assist and restore structural balance as well as alleviate muscle tension and pain from the stresses of everyday life. I love that I can get both my massage and adjustment at one office, and Jenn is amazing at targeting the areas of the body that need the most work and really producing lasting results.

If you live anywhere near Oregon City and have thought about committing to chiropractic care as part of your overall health and wellness regimen, I highly recommend Dr. Jennifer Pitcairn at Complete Health Chiropractic. They are conveniently located at the corner of Molalla Ave and Warner Milne and if you would like to check out her website or contact her directly, I will link to her site below:

Veelle's Idyllic Park https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2019/6/veelles-idyllic-park On June 1st we photographed our first summer wedding of 2019. It was the second time I've had the privile
ge of photographing at this gorgeous venue. Veelle's Idyllic Park is a private 2 acre park located about half an hour south of Oregon City in the rural outskirts of Molalla, Oregon.

From the first look until the last dance, the bride and groom were the most relaxed and fun-loving couple I've ever worked with. Their ceremony was beautiful, the toasts made me cry, the food was delicious and the dances were filled with meaning and tradition.

There are so many little details that make the venue special, and with a playground, yard games, a small creek and plenty of grass and trees to explore, everyone can enjoy themselves - from the youngest of guests to the oldest. (Also, they have made some upgrades since the last time I photographed there and they now have ADA accessible parking and restrooms and their bridal suite and grooms lounge are air conditioned.

Be sure to scroll all the way to the end to see a fun slide show of the happy couples special day and more of the beauty of Veelle's Idyllic Park.

Clavadistas (Cliff Divers) https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2017/12/clavadistas-cliff-divers Meet Hector

This morning on my walk home around Cerro Del Vigía, I watched as he dove off the jagged cliffs two different times.

Take a look 👀

I watched the first time as he literally ran down to his spot on the rocks and made the jump for a small group of onlooking tourists. Then after making his rounds collecting money, he quickly flagged down another van full of visitors and made another jump.

I was curious what a “job” like this pays here in Mazatlán so I struck up a conversation with him. He said he usually makes about $20 US per jump and that he’s been jumping here in Mazatlan for 30 years.

He told me that one time when 3 cruise ships were in town, he jumped 52 times in one day. He called himself a “professional diver” and “the best in Mazatlán.” When I asked him what makes him the best, he said “because I love it.”

What would happen if we all found something that we loved, and just trusted that God would provide the rest?

Hector, I applaud you 👏🏼 for doing what you love. Thank you for letting me take your photo and write about you on my website. May your love and dedication to your job be an inspiration to others.

Beach Bum https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2017/11/beach-bum Yesterday we spent the afternoon at Isla La Piedra (Stone Island), just a short boat ride away. When you read about Stone Island online, it talks about feeling like you've gone back in time a little bit. That is definitely true.

We relaxed at a family owned restaurant called Cerro de los Chivos and let the kids play on the beach. Kenton's swim trunks had a few "wardrobe malfunctions" that gave us all a good belly-laugh.

I hope this little glimpse at our lives here in Mazatlan, Mexico bring a smile to your face.

And if you're thinking about a winter get away to somewhere warm and tropical, we would love to see you here on the beach!

Cultura Mazatlan https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2017/9/cultura-mazatlan Today, I had the privilege of attending a press release detailing some of the events that Cultural Mazatlan has in store for us this fall. Can I just start out by saying how impressed I am with this organization and what they offer?

Here's a short video that shows many of the great productions that will be offered over the next few months - and you are not going to believe the cost of tickets!? The average price for good seats at an opera for example - 300 pesos (about $17 US).

Jenica and I attended "Il Trovador" on Wednesday night - if you follow me on Instagram you may have seen some of it in our Instastory (if you don't follow us, head over here and check it out. I post a lot about our daily life here in Mexico on Instragram Stories that never makes it to facebook or the blog.)

Now, I've never considered myself much of an opera fan... in fact, I think I may have only attended one opera in my life, and that was over 15 years ago when I spent the summer in Italy.

When in Rome, ya know...

Anyhow... this opera was much more engaging. It helped immensely that they subtitled the performance in Spanish and in English so we could read what was happening instead of just relying on the actions of the performers. Even my 9 year old was able to follow the story and stay engaged during the 2+ hour performance.

If you are planning a trip to Mazatlan this fall, a show at the Angela Peralta theater is definitely something you don't want to miss.

(And if you aren't planning a trip to Mazatlan, well... you totally should! It is such a fun and affordable city to visit, plus you could see us while you are here.)

Unfortunately, they do not have the capability to sell tickets online just yet, but when you get here, you can go to the Angela Peralta Theater box office just off Plaza Machado, or to the offices of Cultura Mazatlan to get tickets. Cultura Mazatlan will also deliver tickets to your home if you pay in cash, with a 2 day or more advance notice. Contact Lisa at llankins@culturamazatlan.com or call 982-4444 and ask for Lisa in Promotion.

They are also offering a fun new program this year called "Cena con Cultura" (Dinner with Cultura) where your ticket will get you 10% off at participating restaurants on the day of the show. Restaurants include Macaws, Water's Edge, Machado Grill, Pedro y Lola, Gaia, La Tramoya, La Catrina, La Bohemia, Mr. Lionso, Angelina'sKitchen, La Palapa delMar, La Mazatleca, and Il Mosto.

Just another of the many reason we are loving life here in Mazatlan, Mexico. Thanks for following our journey, and we hope to see you down here one of these days!

Need a second shooter or assistant - try me FOR FREE! https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2017/9/need-a-second-shooter-or-assistant---try-me-for-free

I have reached a point in my career where I'd rather shoot than not shoot. I love to be behind the camera. It's my passion. When I'm shooting, time stands still. I see things through my lens in a different way than most people see the world...

Second Shooter Shay Renee PhotographerShay Renee Be Photography Travels Destination Weddings Second Shooter

It's art, it's beautiful, and it's where I find my joy. I've also rediscovered my love for travel. I love to see new places, meet new people, learn about different cultures, and experience new things.

So for the next year, I'm offering my services as a second shooter FOR FREE! Yes, you read that right! If I'm in your area, I will second shoot with you (with all my own professional equipment) free of charge with no obligation. If you like what I deliver to you (high res jpeg or RAW images within 48 hours of your booking) you can purchase images individually or as a package (price for all images will not exceed $500 US.)

If I am not currently in your area (predominantly Oregon/Mexico), I would still love the opportunity to work with you, and will come to you for only the cost of airfare. That's how much I believe in my work!

I take direction well, have an artistic and creative eye, and can easily shoot 100 good quality images per hour. I get the angles and perspectives that you just aren't capable of obtaining as a single shooter.

Bottom line... I love photography. I love creating art that can be treasured and passed down for generations to come.

But right now in my career and in my personal life, I don't have the time or energy to pursue all the "other stuff" that comes with running your own photography business. The marketing, advertising, editing, client relations, etc.

So let me help you! All my images come to you free of copyright restrictions, watermarks, etc. I am your employee. I am at your beck and call. Shooting is my thing, but I will also gladly carry your equipment, set up lighting, or even grab your favorite drink from Starbucks.

For tax purposes, you can pay me as an independent contractor - and as long as the total in a year is under $600 you don't even have to send me a 1099 tax form at the end of the year. (Taxes... yet another hassle of being a small business owner... in my opinion.)

To see more of my work, check out my portfolio at www.bephotographytravels.com or come follow me on social media: Be Photography Travels on Instagram and Facebook.

And you can always reach out to me via phone, text, or WhatsApp: +1.503.407.9623 (US cell phone 📱)

I'm so excited to be able to offer this service to you and can't wait to collaborate with someone like you that shares my passion and love for photography.

Need a "second shooter"? You have come to the right place! https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2017/8/need-a-second-shooter-i-am-your-gal

I believe that pictures and videos are the most important part of your wedding day.

Everything else will fade away with time, but photographs allow you to cherish the memories forever and pass precious heirlooms on to your children.

But wedding photography has become so expensive! 10 years ago, we spent $3,000 on our photography for our wedding (about 1/3 of our total wedding budget.) Today, packages with well known professional photographers can easily cost upwards of $10,000. And in this digital era when everyone has a camera phone, and many of you have professional or pro-sumer level cameras, it is easy to cut professional photography out of your budget entirely and just rely on well-meaning friends and family to document your most important day.

But what if there was another way? Did you know that a huge portion of what you pay for professional wedding photography is attributed to what we in the photo industry call "post-processing"? It's the time us photographers spend after the wedding making your pictures look perfect. Photoshopping blemishes, airbrushing skin, adding pops of color or erasing distracting details. But there is an array of free software on the market today allowing everyday people to perform this kind of editing, often times from the convenience of your smartphone or tablet.

I love shooting weddings. I love capturing candid moments, details, and the magic that happens during the first kiss. But I'm a mom of three little ones and I just don't have the time to edit hundreds of pictures right now. I've decided to pursue "second shooting" for other photographers, but I would also love to offer those services to you at a discounted rate.

If you plan to have a friend or family member photograph your wedding, but still like the idea of having some professional quality images to cherish your special day, consider hiring me to "second shoot" your wedding.

Here's what you can expect when you hire me:

I will arrive with my professional full frame Nikon DSLR, along with an assortment of high quality prime and zoom lenses. I will dress professionally and stay out of the way as much as possible so that you and your guests can fully enjoy your day.

I will shoot between 500-1000 high quality jpeg images and deliver these images to you within 2 weeks of your wedding via private online viewing gallery with unlimited download capability.

You will own the full copyright to these images. You can edit them however you wish, post them to social media, create your own custom prints and canvases, and anything else you might choose.

What will it cost?

If I'm already in the area where your wedding is taking place, the cost for my services is only $500 (includes up to 5 hours of shooting time). If you are planning a destination wedding, please contact me for special pricing. I love to travel and can often find some excellent deals on flights, so having an English speaking professional photographer at your wedding or event might be more affordable than you could imagine.

Here's a great example of how the shots a "second shooter" is able to capture can actually be so much better than what the person "behind the camera" sees.

This first image is what the person officially taking the picture was able to capture at a recent wedding I was a part of:

And here's my shot from the "second shooter" angle. Much more aesthetically pleasing and artistic (in my professional opinion).

I would love the opportunity to work with you.

Your wedding day will come and go, and while your love may last forever, the memories of that special day will fade away. If there is any one piece of advice I can give to brides and grooms, it's this... Hire a professional photographer. And now, with this exclusive opportunity, it can finally be affordable to do so!

And of course, I love to work with other pro's as well. If you are in a bind and need someone with their own equipment to second shoot a wedding or event with you, please don't hesitate to reach out to me!

Green Villa Gardens - Oregon Destination Wedding https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2017/7/green-villa-gardens---oregon-destination-wedding Last summer we had the honor of photographing the most beautiful destination wedding in the Pacific Northwest. Green Villa Gardens is located about an hour south of Portland, Oregon and is a simply stunning location to tie the knot! Out of town guests stayed at The Grand Hotel in Salem, and shuttle buses brought them on a beautiful drive out into the country in time to enjoy pre-ceremony cocktails on the lawn and bask in the beauty that this part of the country has to offer. The August weather was absolutely perfect and the lighting throughout the venue provided the quintessential ambiance for a summer's eve wedding.

The bride and the groom were the most gracious hosts I've ever witnessed at a wedding, always more concerned about their guests than themselves. They exchanged the most meaningful, handwritten vows, surrounded by friends and family from both near and far. Later in the evening, the toasts from both the bride's sister and groom's sister also brought many a tear to peoples eyes.

Dinner consisted of homemade wood fired pizza from Maiale di Volo and fresh tacos from The Taco Pedaler, served directly from the vendors "food carts".  If you aren't familiar with Portland, they are quite famous for their delicious assortment of food trucks, so it was certainly a nice local touch to add to their most meaningful day.

Thanks Diana and Johnny for allowing us to be a part of such a special celebration. It was certainly a wedding to remember.

La Paz via Ferry from Mazatlan https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2017/7/la-paz Baja FerriesBaja FerryBaja Ferry Mazatlan to La Paz, Mexico

One of the funnest things we did as a family while living in Mazatlan was taking the Baja Ferry over to La Paz. If you are not sure where either of those locations are in Mexico, here's a map of our journey.

We boarded the boat in the evening and got to sail off into the sunset. It was gorgeous! We ate dinner in the dining hall, which also had a full bar, a stage, and live music! People had told me that taking the ferry felt kind of like being on a cruise ship and they weren't kidding! We were only able to get a private sleeping room for the return trip, so for the 15 hour trip over to La Paz, we made our way back to our sala, or living room and settled into our reclining chairs for movies on the big screen. The chairs were not the most comfortable and I think most people in the room ended up curled up on the floor with blankets by the time morning came. The return trip was much more comfortable snuggled into our private room with 4 bunks, a window and a private bathroom.

While in La Paz, we stayed at the Paraiso del Mar Resort. It was amazing and perfect for our little get away. When we arrived via ferry in the morning, we took a taxi to downtown La Paz where the manager for our vrbo (vacation rental by owner) condo met us and escorted us across the bay in the resorts free water taxi service.

Our condo was 2 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms including a bathtub and came fully equipped with everything we would need for our stay. The bathtub was a big deal since our rental house in Mazatlan only had showers. Apparently bathtubs are not as common in Mexico as they are in the United States, so having one, even for just a few days, was a treat. Our amazing outdoor patio spaces overlooked the pool, palm trees and the ocean. We relaxed at the pool, enjoyed drinks with umbrellas in them at the swim up bar, walked the private beaches in front of the resort collecting some of the biggest sea shells we've ever seen, and even did a little kayaking with the boats that are available to guest to use free of charge.

Most days, we would take a short shuttle ride back to the water taxi, take the fun 10 minute boat ride over to the mainland and explore the cute city of La Paz. Similar to Mazatlan, they also have their own Malecohn or boardwalk, although theirs is much shorter than the one in Mazatlan.

Since we were essentially worldschooling our kids while we wintered in Mexico, the Museo de la Ballena (Whale Museum) seemed like the perfect educational activity while we were there and it did not disappoint. After paying your admission, you are given the choice to take a self guided tour, or be guided by a local that will speak to you in your native language. We choose this option and our guide was very fun and informative, although slightly difficult to understand at times. From what I gathered, the guides are just volunteers so we tipped him well at the end for all his effort.

We were able to see many full size skeletons of sea life including turtles, whales, dolphins and sharks.  Some were reproductions, but many were real bones.  If fact, all the bones and teeth in the pictures seen here are real!  We learned about the differences between a whale, shark and dolphin and about many of the different types of each.  We also learned about behaviors, what they eat and similarities they have with humans and other types of animals.

Our final night in La Paz, we had hoped to eat at this cute little hamburger joint that some other vacationers at our resort had told us about, where they grill the burgers underneath the hood of an old truck, but unfortunately it was closed that night, so we ended up at The Dock Cafe, overlooking the marina, with a nice sandy outdoor play area where the kids were given a whole box full of toys to keep them occupied while we waited for our food to arrive. There was live music and dancing and the place was obviously popular with the expat crowd. The dance floor was full of retired Americans... usually not our first choice of ambiance... we prefer to mingle with the local crowd when we travel, but the food, drinks and service made the evening worthwhile.

La Paz RestaurantLa Paz RestaurantLa Paz Restaurant La Paz RestaurantLa Paz RestaurantLa Paz Restaurant It was sad to say goodbye to such a beautiful little piece of planet earth, but we will be back, hopefully for a longer stay next time. If you have never considered La Paz as a travel destination choice, I would highly encourage you to check it out. They have their own airport, and if you live in Southern California and can walk across the border to TJ, I've heard you can find some amazing direct flight deals.

Bravery, Spontaneity and Beauty https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2017/5/bravery-spontaneity-and-beauty So for those of you who have followed our adventures as they've unfolded over the past year - we just last Monday arrived back in the States from our "winter in Mazatlan". We will be staying at my dad's property in North Idaho for much of the summer - and it's only about an hour and a half from the Canadian border - so on our 4th day back I decided I was going to surprise the kids with a weekend get away to Canada.

Be Photography TravelsBe Photography Travels to CanadaFrom Mexico to Canada in less than a week.

Because seriously how cool is it to say that you've been in three different COUNTRIES in the same week!

Worldschooling3 countries in less than a week!

The drive from rural Clark Fork, up north through Bonners Ferry and eventually crossing into British Columbia is stunning! Here are some of the amazing vistas we stopped to photograph along the way. I love that my girls are getting the "photography bug" just like their mama.

Once we crossed into Canada, we stopped at this cute little vineyard so the kids could stretch their legs and I could pick up a delicious bottle of the local Pinot. Then we continued on to our destination... Ainsworth Hotsprings. If you haven't been, you really should! It's a natural hot springs but the blend of minerals is such that it doesn't stink like sulfur like many of the naturally occurring hot springs in the Pacific Northwest. Also, it has this awesome cave that you can walk through... definitely the highlight from my childhood memories!

Ainsworth Hotsprings CaveAinsworth Hotsprings Cave

The trip was such a last minute thing that I didn't even bother to make hotel reservations. Such spontaneity almost turned dismal when I learned it was a holiday weekend in Canada and all the hotels near Ainsworth were booked. Airbnb to the rescue! I jumped on the app, found a cute little place about an hour away, chatted with the host, and booked it within an hour of arriving at Ainsworth. Then we spent the afternoon relaxing in the hot pools and exploring the caves.

The next day, we drove home - making a loop through customs so that we could get both our US and Canada stamps in our passports (they hadn't stamped them on the way into Canada the day before and my older girls were terribly disappointed.)

Fellow moms - this was soooo out of my comfort zone to take such an unplanned, last minute, international road trip - alone with my 3 kids. But we did it! And it was amazing! I had such a great time and made some memories with them that will last a lifetime. If you are on the fence about traveling with your littles... JUST DO IT!

The kids have been doing home school with these two amazing teachers for the last couple months. Today was their last day with them (sniff, sniff) so we all went on a fun trip to explore a new beach and collect sea shells!

Another great coffee shop in Mazatlan https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2017/4/another-great-coffee-shop-in-mazatlan My "office" today was another great cafe here in Mazatlan. Sole Mare in Centro (near the Cathedral) has a great atmosphere and plenty of tables. Today when I wandered in, they even had Adele playing on the radio. She's pretty much my favorite singer ever so I felt right at home... well except for the fact that everyone was speaking Spanish and I was probably the only gringa in there.

JournalJournalBe Photography Travels

If you are looking to practice your Spanish, this is a great choice! Unlike Looney Bean in Olas Altas and Rico's in the Golden Zone, Sole Mare seems to have mostly Spanish speaking waiters, and locals appear to frequent the cafe far more than English speaking tourist and expats.

Today, I tried to have a conversation with this gentleman:

SoleMarSoleMarAntonio Torres Ochoa Arquitecto

But alas, I am still not very good at understanding Spanish.

Así que Tony, si está leyendo esto, por favor dígame en los comentarios lo que estaba tratando de decirme en Sole Mare esta mañana. Entiendo el español escrito mucho mejor que hablar. Gracias y mucho gusto :)

Mazatlan Souvenir? https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2017/4/mazatlan-souvenir Before our family moved here to Mazatlan, we got rid of at least 75% of what we owned (you can read more about our downsizing adventures here), so I'm a little picky about the kinds of "souvenirs" we buy to take back with us.

In other words, I hate buying cheap crap from China.

Unfortunately, that's what many of the vendors sell here. But that's not what this post is about today.

A friend of ours told my daughter about this man who sells handmade journals in Plaza Machado, so last weekend we headed out to find him.

If you are in Mazatlan and looking for gifts to take home to your family, come see this gentleman at Plaza Machado. He is usually there Thursday - Sunday evening and sets up his table around 7pm.

Oh and be sure to tell him you heard about him here on the Be Photography Blog!

Sunset Atop the Best Western Posada Freeman - Mazatlan https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2017/4/sunset-atop-the-best-western-posada-freeman---mazatlan Mazatlan has some of the most beautiful sunsets.

Last night we were able to experience it from one of the prettiest places in the city -

high atop the Best Western Posada Freeman Hotel in Olas Altas.

The views are stunning!

If you are visiting Mazatlan, it's worth the trip. 9 floors in the creaky elevator, and then 3 stories more of stairs.

We were told by a tour guide that it was the first "skyscraper" to be built in Mazatlan.

The staff is super friendly and they have delicious pina coladas!

The rooftop pool offers loads of fun and amazing views.

My girls and I try to visit a new coffee shop or restaurant here in Mazatlan every week for some of our home school lessons and Rico's Cafe in the Golden Zone has been our favorite. The staff is super friendly and accommodating, the coffee and hot chocolate are delicious, and there is plenty of indoor or outdoor seating.

Rediscovering the Joy of Photography https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2016/11/the-pink-bicycle If you happened to have had a photoshoot with me over the last few months, or follow me on instagram or facebook, you already know that my family and I are in Mexico for the winter. We are calling it a "working vacation" since my husband gets to keep his current job and work remotely while we are out of the area. We rented a furnished house here in Mazatlan for less than half as much as we were paying in rent back in Oregon. Although my main role while we are here is that of wife, mom, and homeschool teacher for the girls, I am excited to find the joy and passion in photography once again, and of course share a little glipse of that with you. Here are some fun pictures that Jenica and I took at sunset right outside our front door.

Boones Ferry Fun Run https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2016/9/boones-ferry-fun-run Today was the girls' Fun Run at Boones Ferry Primary that they have been training for all month long! The weather was beautiful and even though I arrived late and couldn't find a place to park, the Lord gave me the most perfect spot to sit and photograph the race from! And since I've been remembering to keep my camera in my purse AT ALL TIMES I actually had it with me, and had the perfect lens on for the event. The girls did awesome, I'm so proud of them! Fall Special Mini Sessions https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2016/9/fall-special-mini-sessions School is back in session and fall is in the air!

The Be Photography Fall Special will be a little different this year. I usually book a full day of sessions during the first weekend in October, but this year I will be at Disneyland with my kiddos, so instead of booking one or two full days of sessions, I am going to offer a handful of evening mini-sessions during September and October at Graham Oaks Nature Park in Wilsonville. Cost will be $175 for a 20 minute session for up to 4 people. Additional people can be added for $25 each.

(If you have noticed that my session times have gotten shorter over the years, it's because I have realized that I usually get the best pictures during the first 15 minutes of a session while the kids are still fresh and everyone is excited. I am confident that I will get plenty of amazing shots during your 20 minute mini session. If you think you would like to shoot for longer, please feel free to book one of our full length sessions. These allow for more time to relax, be you, and capture your families personality. Mini sessions are a great way to update your family portraits without spending a lot of time or money.)

You will receive 5 edited digital images of photographers choice, guaranteed to be delivered to you electronically by November 7th, 2016. This is perfect for a quick update to your family photos or to get that perfect photo for your Christmas Card this year. Your digital images will be large enough to print up to 8 X 10 in size and you will own the full copyright to them, which means you can order your cards from anywhere (although we do have some pretty fun options should you choose to order from us! These Modern Pop Cards are one of my favorites! It actually becomes a Christmas Tree ornament for friends and family when they receive your card in the mail!

Lyons Wedding - Vanderbeck Valley Farms https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2016/8/lyons-wedding---vanderbeck-valley-farms Last weekend we had the privilege of photographing our first wedding at Vanderbeck Valley Farms in Mt. Angel and it was a GORGEOUS venue! The bride had her senior pictures done by us 5 years ago, and in 2014 we had our babies (her first and my 3rd) just two weeks apart, so she's always had a special place in my heart and I was absolutely thrilled when she asked if I would photograph her wedding. From the dress, to the flowers, to the delicious cupcakes - the day was perfect. I hope you enjoy some of the sneak peeks featured here! Be sure to follow us on Instragram as well to get real time sneak peeks and videos.

Combs Plastic Surgery https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2016/7/combs-plastic-surgery Today I had the privilege of returning to Combs Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics in West Linn to take some updated staff photos. It was a great way to spend an hour. The entire office is super friendly and easy going. Dr. Combs has been specializing in plastic surgery in the Portland metro area since 1993 and a quick search of online reviews revealed nothing but positive things about his office, his staff, his professionalism, and his pricing.

Here is an example of what one woman had to say: "There are doctors who would practice medicine regardless of money or prestige. Dr. Combs is one of these doctors. He is very knowledgeable and experienced, but he is also compassionate and kind. Every person in his office, from reception to his wonderful nurse, make the experience very positive. I highly recommend Dr Combs and his staff."

We took some group shots behind the welcoming reception desk, where you will usually find Kelli hard at work.

Kelli is their patient coordinator and has over 15 years of customer service experience, 5 of which have been in the medical field.

Then we moved outside to get the rest of the photos we needed in natural light. I prefer to shoot in natural light whenever possible. Especially shooting up close head shots, I think that outdoor ambient light gives the most personable and flattering portrayal of the subject.

Regardless of whether you are in the market for these type of services or not, Dr. Combs and his staff were an absolute pleasure to work with and I would highly recommend them to anyone interested in a local referral.

The Birth Story - More than a slideshow https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2015/11/the-birth-story---more-than-a-slideshow

Be Photography is excited to be partnering with local photographer Amy Davis to offer a premium Birth Story experience like no other. When you book Be Photography for your Birth Story, you get a keepsake that will last a lifetime. Black and white photos from the birth of your son or daughter will be put to music and produced in a way that tells the story of your child's entrance into the world. The video will be burned onto an archival quality DVD, and can also be uploaded to Youtube for you to creatively announce your new arrival to the world! Your Birth Story experience begins when you contact us to book your "event". Amy will meet with you to discuss your birth plan and any special requests or concerns you might have. She will give you her contact information and ask you to give her regular updates, especially in the final weeks leading up to your due date.

We currently only book 2 Birth Story experiences per month to ensure that we are available when it's time for your bundle to arrive. Amy will come to the hospital for the birth and spend as much time as needed to capture the experience. Obviously every birth is different, but on average she will usually spend 2-4 hours with you during labor and delivery, and then another hour or so after to capture special moments.

Many photographers offer birth story packages, but ours is unique. Amy is not only a talented photographer, she is a natural in the delivery room. She would like to be a doula some day and she has been present for countless births. She can offer helpful information and support in addition to taking amazing photographs. She also has 4 kids of her own, so she knows what it's like to be in labor. She really goes above and beyond to make your experience the very best it can be. Extra pillow? Ice water? She's your gal! Sit back, relax(if you opt for the epidural), and enjoy this special time with your spouse while Amy takes care of the details.

The video below is my son's Birth story, with images taken by Amy in February of 2014.

Click the link below to watch another example of the type of video you can expect to receive when you purchase your Birth Story from us.

What are you waiting for? If you are expecting a new baby in 2016, what could be more valuable than a keepsake Birth Story to cherish this special moment in your life? Call or email us today to discuss the details of YOUR story!

On a mission to make photos FUN! https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2015/9/on-a-mission-to-make-photos-fun

I'm on a mission. I want to make family photos enjoyable! I know, it seems crazy. I remember the days of going to the mall to have our family portraits taken. It was torture! No matter when we made our appointment, they were ALWAYS running behind, which meant tired cranky kids and frustrated parents. So we would put on our fake smiles and stand where they told us to stand, and hope they would get at least one photo where the kids weren't crying. It was not a "fun event". It was a chore that I tolerated because I value the importance of documenting our families growth in photos.

But what if instead, having your family pictures taken could be a fun, memorable experience where the smiles are genuine, laughter flows freely, the kids look forward to it, and it doesn't seem like a chore? It IS possible. Here are some ways that we help facilitate the experience:

1. I love to book family photo sessions outside - somewhere fun with lots of room for the kids to run and explore. Not only does this enable me to get some great candid shots of the kids in their element, it gives them a distraction in between the "boring" posed shots and helps them to get their wiggles out so they don't become grumpy or feel "cooped up".

2. I try to connect with the kids right off the bat. I get down at their level, introduce myself, and tell them how much fun we are going to have. I try to let them pick some of the poses, or let them do some silly shots to make them feel more involved in the process.

3. I encourage the parents to just have fun with it. Don't worry if the kids don't cooperate with everything I suggest. Just go with the flow and enjoy yourselves and be confident that we will be able to capture some amazing shots. Remember, it only takes about a hundredth of a second to freeze that fleeting smile or perfect pose.

4. I try to give out stickers or suckers or some other fun momento after every session so the next time family picture time rolls around, they have something tangible to look forward to.

5. Finally, the studio open house events that we put on are a great way to get your kids to become more comfortable with photos and see it as a fun event. Once a year in the summer time, we host a "Little Girls and Pearls" dress up event and a "Superheroes in the Studio" dress up event. The events are free and not only give new clients a chance to try us out with no obligation, but they provide kids with a fun experience involving photos so next time you schedule a session, hopefully they will remember how much fun they had playing dress up in our studio and look forward to the process instead of complaining about it.

Here are a couple links to youtube videos featuring this years event attendees:

We would love for you to give us a try for your next family photo session! We offer $50 off for first time clients, so be sure to mention that it's your first time when you book your session!

New Office Space - I'm in Love! https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2015/6/new-office-space---im-in-love Over Memorial Day weekend, I hired my dear friend Genevieve to come do a makeover on my formal dining room. We rarely used the space for social gatherings and more often I was finding myself meeting with clients in there. So I decided that instead of having our home office upstairs in a spare bedroom, I would move it downstairs for all to see (and use!) I had some specific requirements though. It needed to look neat and organized. During the 4 years that we've lived in our home, the office was the one room that was really always a disaster. I'm not exagerating! It was a disorganized mess! Secondly, I didn't want the printer to show and I wanted the space to appear simple and clutter free. I also wanted the kids to have a work space to do homework or color while I work.

Genevieve went above and beyond what I envisioned. I wish she had a website that I could link you to, because she is AMAZING and I would highly recommend her for any decorating projects or ideas you might have. She researched every aspect of the projecct before we began and provided a detailed spreadsheet of what she estimated it would cost. She worked within my budget to make things beautiful, functional AND affordable and when all was said and done, she came in within $13.00 of her estimate. Not only that, but she completed the project in record time, all while we were gone over the holiday weekend, so I had the awesome experience of coming home to "the big reveal!"

Here is what was awaiting me:

Pure and utter gorgeousness from top to bottom! The new office space for Be Photography Oregon is exactly what I wanted! Crisp, clean, organized with hints of artistic flair throughout! The muted color pallet makes the space appear so much bigger than it was before and everything about it just makes me happy. As if I didn't love my job enough already, now I can say I enjoy going to work even more!

And because no makeover post is complete without a before picture... here you go. Thank you so much to everyone that helped make this dream of mine come true!

She also made the space coordinate with my front room (which you can see a small bit of here) and hung a gorgeous gallery wall to display my canvases. But if you want to see that, you'll just have to book a session with us and come in person! Thanks for taking the time to stop by and look around! And if you are interested in Genevieve's services just leave a comment below!

So delicious I had to blog about it! https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2015/5/so-delicious-i-had-to-blog-about-it You probably know by now that here at Be Photography Oregon, we love to support other local businesses. I have been getting 1 or 2 meals a week from a wonderful chef (is that what you call yourself Amy?) in Oregon City for the last few months. You can check out her website here. She specializes in healthy, homemade meals and can come cook them right in your kitchen, or have them delivered to you weekly. This last week I got two amazing items from her. First up was a mango and cucumber salsa that was so delicious I may have been eating it by the spoonful instead of using it to top the pork tenderloin and fruit and nut cauli-couscous that it came with.

The second item that was also a huge hit with my family this week was the chicken mango salad.

And just for fun, here is a variety of the wonderful items from her menu that we have had the privilege of sampling.

Andrea's Favorite Fajita and Cabbage Salad

Root Veggie Mash with Pork Tenderloin

Meatballs over Spaghetti Squash

Zucchini Noodles

Paleo Veggie Risotto with Grilled Chicken

The way I see it, we could spend $50 to go out to eat at a restaurant or get take out, and probably end up with something very unhealthy and lacking in nutrients. Or for the same price, Amy can cook an amazing, healthy, AND delicious meal for us.

If you haven't tried out her food yet, head on over and check out her weekly menu! www.amyinyourkitchen.com

Lemonade Stand for Rent! https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2015/5/lemonade-stand-for-rent My little entrepreneur is going to be renting out her lemonade stand this summer!

It also doubles nicely as a photo booth for birthday parties and events.

Her rental rates are as follows:

$1.00 per hour

$5.00 per day

$10.00 for the whole weekend (Friday - Sunday)

Delivery may be available within the Big Meadow housing development (dependent on parents availability)

If you would like to support this fine young lady in her endeavors, email shay@bephotographyoregon.com or text 503.407.9622 and I will have her give you a call. This is her first business venture so I hope you'll be patient with her as she learns the fine art of customer relations.

There are so many negative articles circling the internet right now talking about how awful it is to throw your kids elaborate birthday parties. I thought about linking to some of them here, but decided against it. Why perpetuate the negativity?

I get it... you shouldn't go into debt for a the sake of a child's party. And you shouldn't feel like you HAVE to throw some elaborate, Pinterest inspired party just to be seen as a "good mom" in the eyes of those around you.

But the other side of that coin is that you shouldn't be shamed for throwing an amazing party for your kids either...

Recently my own little man turned one. Not only is he our third and last (yes, definitely our last... we made that official on Valentine's Day last year - but that's a story for a different time), but he's also our only boy, welcomed by two very adoring older sisters, ages 3 and 6. Those of you who are done having children yourselves know the bitter sweetness that comes with each "last first" that your baby is going to experience. The last "first tooth", the last "first Christmas", the last "first pee pee in the potty" ... You get the point.

So for our families last "First Birthday Party", we decided to go all out. Not only had I never planned a boys party before, I also had two very eager little assistants who were beyond excited to plan a fun party for their baby brother.

Our Little Mr. has always had the nickname "little man". He was born with lots of hair and was the spitting image of his father so it seemed only fitting to throw him a "Little Man Mustache Bash" for his 1st!

I had some left over photo booth props from a volunteer event I participated in at my daughters school, so I knew a mustache photo booth was going to be a must at the party.

I decided to use only local vendors because I absolutely love to support my local economy, and being a small business owner myself, I have a passion for networking with and utilizing the skills of other small businesses in my area.

The birthday cake and cupcakes were provided by Devine Delights by Angie, and all the printable signs, banners, invitations and thank you cards were handmade by Kelly Hernandez. (If you're interested, she'll be donating a custom party package to our school auction being held next month at The Country Church. You can check out details and order tickets here.

My dear friend Marcy Jo at Heavenly Scrumptious made the cookies and they were THE BEST THING EVER! Not only were they the cutest designs, made exactly like the picture I had showed her, but they were also the best tasting cookies I have ever had (which can leave quite a dilemma when you want to eat one early before the party but don't want to ruin the beautiful display!)

Planning the birthday party was an excuse to be fun and creative with my girls. My oldest adopted the job of putting mustache stickers on photos of the birthday boy and hanging them on the wall in the shape of a giant 1. Every time she would work on this project, she would giggle at the sight of her little brother wearing mustaches.

My mom offered to make the bow-tie party favors and turned it into a fun craft project for the kids to participate in a couple weeks before the party.

A good friend (and godparent to our kids) came early and her and my mom managed to make and plate most of the food in record time!

A family friend of ours came as a butler of sorts; greeting guests, serving hors d' oeuvres, and taking photos in the photo booth. He was quite the handsome addition to our party and such a huge help! He's also a little entrepreneur himself so don't be surprised if you see his face popping up in the local business world one of these days.

The party went off with out a hitch - except for forgetting to cook the spring rolls that were on the menu.

Kenton was blessed with tons of fun gifts and everyone enjoyed watching him smash his cake!

I know... he'll never remember this big hurrah we put on for his first birthday. But sometimes the party isn't ALL about the person being celebrated.

His birthday was an excuse for me to have fun. I loved planning his mustache bash.

Searching fun ideas on Pinterest, watching my girls' eyes light up when we talked about his party, and seeing the joy on their faces when they got to help with things...

Having an excuse to get our family and friends together.

Having an excuse to eat cake and cookies.

Having adorable photos to put in a baby book for the Little Mr. so he can look back later and see how silly he looked covered in birthday cake.

Supporting other local businesses.

These are just some of the reasons why I refuse to feel bad about throwing big birthday parties for my kids.

Will I do it every year? Certainly not!

Will I feel obligated to put on beautiful, photo worthy parties? Of course not!

And neither should you! Do what you love, do what's right for your family, do what will make your life easier, some years maybe you don't do anything at all.

It is all okay and I believe that what ever you choose, your kids will turn out just fine.

Thanks for stopping by!

Presley's Birthday Party https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2015/1/presleys-birthday-party Today was this sweet little lady's birthday party! Hard to believe it's already been two years since I went to visit her and her mom in the hospital, and then took her newborn pictures a few days later. She is quite a beauty, just like her mama, and her princess party was simply adorable.

This Princess Sophia cake and darling cupcakes, complete with mini princess crowns, were made by Presley's mom. Her talent is never-ending! She is also my super fabulous hair dresser, and has been known to make some pretty awesome Pinterest crafts on occasion.

My oldest, enjoying some sweets while the birthday girl plays with her new kitchen in the background.

Opening presents!

Getting ready to have the cake that she has been so patiently waiting for!

Big brother taking a break to eat a cupcake!

Thanks Presley for being such a cutie-pie and letting us come share in your special day! You are one blessed little girl!

These two! https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2014/12/these-two Seriously... could these two be any cuter?! They are less than a month apart - last time her mom and I were together we were both 8 months pregnant while I did her maternity photos. This time their cute little family were here for Christmas pictures so I couldn't resist grabbing Kenton to come meet her and of course snap some adorable pictures!

Santa! https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2014/12/santa Sometimes outtakes from a photo session are just the best! This photo from a recent Christmas session was just too cute not to share, so we asked for caption suggestions on our facebook page and quotes from the movie Elf! were definitely the favorite.

Did you know you can pin pictures from our blog straight to your Pinterest board? Go ahead... give it a try!

Shenanigans in the Be Photography Studio! https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2014/12/shenanigans-in-the-be-photography-studio I don't know about your family, but here at our house, we have some cute little elves that come visit every year around the holidays. Last night they found the Be Photography Portrait Studio for the first time and from the looks of the pictures on the camera this morning, they had lots of fun! Here's how the kids discovered them:

And here's what was on the memory card when I downloaded the pictures to the computer:

Elf on a shelf??? More like Elf in a tree!

Do you have elves that visit your house? Maybe an Elf on the Shelf just like ours? We would love to hear about the shenanigans that yours may be getting into this holiday season! Send us a message, comment here or head on over to our facebook page www.facebook.com/bephotographyoregon

And the winner is .... https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2014/10/and-the-winner-is A few months ago, we decided to do a fun "Pinspired" contest where we had our facebook followers submit their favorite themed photo shoot idea from Pinterest. The ideas we received were so fun, I honestly wish we could have done each and every one of them! Some of the ideas did help to inspire this summer's "Little Girls and Pearls" event, along with the "Wild Wild West" event - but the winner was a super hero themed image sent in by Cassi Syphard. For her winning submission, her family got to participate in a fun half hour mini-session. and will get their choice of 3 free digital files. Keep your eye on our facebook page for more contests like this in the future! It was "super" fun!

Here are some of the great captures from the session:

Fall is in the air! https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2014/10/fall-is-in-the-air Fall is in full swing here in the northwest, and it gets me excited every year to get out there and take pictures! We have been the busiest we've ever been this year with photo sessions, so I'm doing a little multi-tasking with my blog post today. I took my kids location scouting the other day and found an absolutely gorgeous location for Fall Pictures, so if you would still like to get family pictures done outside this year, now is the time to book! I'll be at the location pictured here this Saturday, October 18th and I have a couple openings if you'd like to book a session. So far the weather is looking promising, but if it gets completely rained out, we'll reschedule everyone for the following weekend.

This is my handsome little 8 month old. He is loving life now that he can sit up on his own, and enjoyed being plopped down amidst the fall leaves to explore his surroundings (and munch on a few random leaves while he was at it.)

These are his sisters. They were not as excited about the outing, but did manage to pose for this cute picture with him.

This is my oldest, 6 going on 18, as she gets an idea for a fun pose to do with brother. I can't wait until she's old enough to come on shoots with me and really help me out.

For now, this is her idea of helping. When I couldn't get the little man to look at the camera with my funny noises, claps and whistles, she implemented her own method.

What can I say... it worked! And he's even smiling. However, I doubt you really want her in your family photos with her hands all over your baby's cheeks!

I love this next set of sibling shots with my 3 year old and her little brother. It warms my heart to see them together. They've become closer now that biggest sister is in school all day and they get some time with just each other.

The outing wasn't entirely smiles and laughs. There were a few tears shed at one point, but even the sad moments can make for some darn cute pictures, and help to tell the story of life.

Eventually the smiles came back and we ended our adventure on a happy note.

And through out the tears, the arguments, the not wanting to share their toys, these two really are the best of friends... and I pray they always will be!

Thanks for taking the time to check out our blog today! Click the Contact section of our website to schedule a session or get more information.

Be Photography "Specials" https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2014/10/be-photography-specials Usually once or twice a year here at Be Photography Oregon, we like to put on special events. The Fall Special has been the most popular and has been going on for quite a few years now. Every year is a little different, but the premise is the same. We pick a fun location and book a whole bunch of shoots in one day or weekend. This allows us to offer you a discounted price, since we aren't traveling all over to take the pictures.

The discount also comes with a few sacrifices though, and my perfectionist nature has a hard time with that. For example, I usually don't shoot in the middle of the day, just in case it is bright and sunny that day, because I like to avoid harsh shadows and squinty eyes. However, with the specials, we book families all day long and can't control the weather (this year looks like it is going to be bright and sunny... which is certainly better than rain, but I would have preferred overcast or partly cloudy to get the best portraits possible.)

We also usually shoot for at least 45 minutes to an hour, and sometimes it takes kids (and adults too, if we're being honest) about that long to open up and start truly being comfortable with the process. The special time slots are only 30 minutes, and although this is plenty of time to get lots of really great shots, it sometimes doesn't lend itself to the fun candids or more natural poses and expressions that you might get in portraits taken during a longer session.

Finally. the specials that we offer usually specify that the photographer will choose which images come with your package. This years Fall Special comes with 10 digital files. The rest of the images from your session will be available in an online gallery for purchase if you would like, but this isn't always the case with specials. We save time and money by not having to edit every good picture from your session, but this also means that we might not pick the same images that you would have chosen had you booked a full session with us.

Of course, there are upsides too. First and foremost, you save money! Our prices have increased over the years for our full sessions, in order to compensate for the cost and upkeep of professional equipment and editing software, props, website renewals, ect. But we have done our best to keep the price of the Fall Special reasonable and affordable so everyone has the opportunity to get some great family portraits done at least once a year. It is also a great way for new clients to try us out with out committing to a full session. It's always in the Fall, which is my personal favorite time for portraits and we try to choose a location that is fun, private, and unique. In fact, we are always scouting for great private properties to use for photo shoots, and if we end up using yours for our Fall Special, your session is free that year! We also try to make a point of bringing along some fun props and furniture. These items are available during full sessions as well, but usually by request only since we obviously can't haul multiple couches, chairs, hay bails, ect to every shoot we do.

Anyway, I hope this information helps you understand our specials a little more, and allows you to give a little bit of grace to us if your pictures don't turn out exactly as you envisioned they would when you browsed our website. Our ultimate hope is that you give us the opportunity to photograph you again in the future, either at next years Fall Special (be sure to book early... this years spots filled VERY fast!) or during a full private session.

Thank you so much for allowing us to do what we love! We hope our passion for photography and commitment to you stand out in your next session with us, and as usual, please feel free to contact us with any questions, concerns, or ideas that you have.

We are also compiling a client email list to help keep you up to date about specials and events her at Be Photography. If you would like to be added to that list, send us an email at shay@bephotographyoregon.com.

Wild Wild West Little Boys Invitation Event https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2014/9/wild-wild-west-little-boys-invitation-event This post may cause a little confusion since 2 out of 3 of the models I had today to preview the location were girls, but this event is only open to little boys, ages 6 months to 12 years old. In case you missed it back in June, we had our 1st annual "Little Girls and Pearls" event at our studio here in Molalla and it was a huge success. This event is very similar in that all sitting fees are waived. It is completely free to come have pictures taken, and if you end up liking them, you will have the option to purchase digital files for $10 each, or order prints directly from the online gallery. It's a great, no risk way to give Be Photography a try if you've never been photographed by us before!

The Wild Wild West event will take place at a private farm here in Molalla on Sunday September 14th. The address is 32050 S. Ona Way. We will have a sign posted at the end of the long driveway off Ona Way. As you come down the driveway, stay straight and you will see a large gravel area to park in before you get to the house. We will have some fun props for you to use, but we encourage you to bring anything of your own that you think would be fun for pictures. The event is open house style, from 3pm - 7pm, so if multiple people are here at the same time, we will rotate every 5 - 10 minutes so no one has to wait too long. Feel free to stay as long as you would like though - just because we rotate you out doesn't mean you are done. You can wait in line again to try another set, change outfits, or just take a break to let little ones play.

I visited the location today and took some sample shots so you would have an idea of what to expect. As noted above, my models are mostly girls so even though you see girls pictured here, we would ask that you please limit this even to boys only. Thanks so much and we can't wait to see you.

I love the rustic fences and tall grass!

We will have a much better riding horse for kids to pose on, and possibly a green John Deere kids tractor as well.

We will have a few straw hats available but please bring your own if you have one. Ours are pretty old and might not last through the day if lots of little kids are wearing them.

We will have an assortment of bandannas, along with this cute box and a silver washtub for those little guys who might not be able to quite sit up on their own yet.

Cowboy boots would be a great prop to bring, even if they don't fit your little guy. Another really cute idea for toddler age boys is to bring daddy's cowboy boots and have him pose naked in them. Naked baby bottoms can be awfully cute, and make great blackmail pictures later on when they're in high school!

View the facebook event here: Wild Wild West Little Boys Invitation Event. Be sure to RSVP and share the event with your friends! For each new family that you bring (who has never been photographed by Be Photography), you will receive one free digital file of your choice.

Is it Be Photography or Bachelder Photography? https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2014/9/is-it-be-photography-or-bachelder-photography Well... it's complicated. The short answer: Both names are ours. Our registered business name with the State of Oregon is "Be Photography". You may have seen our white SUV around town.

And of course our website is www.bephotographyoregon.com.

We use to have a facebook page titled Be Photography. Things were much less confusing back then. But someone on the east coast decided to trademark the name "Be Photography" and in turn asked facebook to take down all pages that infringed on their trademark. We had one opportunity to change the name of the page and get it back up and running with out losing all of our "fans" at the time. They wouldn't let us use anything that remotely resembled Be Photography (we tried B.E. Photography and Be Photography Oregon) so we ended up with Bachelder Photography.

Since that happened a couple of years ago, we bounced the idea around of switching everything over to Bachelder Photography, but honestly, we just really like the name Be Photography - so we've adopted Be Photography Oregon as our own, so as not to be confused with the Maryland company. In the mean time, that leaves us with a presence on facebook under one name and the rest of our advertising under another.

Fortunately the bank will take checks made out to either name, so for that purpose it doesn't really matter, but in establishing brand recognition it has proven difficult. So... this little post is just to make you aware that the pictures you see on the "Bachelder Photography" facebook page are actually taken by Be Photography Oregon. Hopefully someday we will be able to change our name on facebook to match our business registration, but for now facebook will not allow us to do so.

If I've learned one thing from this fiasco, it is that simply registering your business with the state you live in isn't enough in this technological era we live in. Trademarks can be expensive but they will protect you from situations just like this happening in the future of your own business.

If you have any questions for us, or suggestions on how we can make things less confusing for YOU, please comment here or send us an email.

~Shay

Little Girls and Pearls https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2014/6/little-girls-and-pearls Our invitation event "Little Girls and Pearls" is only a week away and we hope you are as excited as we are!

I wanted to take a moment to answer questions and share my vision for the event. First of all, it is completely free to come have fun with your little girl. However, if you love how your photos turn out, they will all be available for purchase, either by downloading the digital file for $10 each or by ordering prints directly from a password protected online gallery. All images will be available online within 2 weeks of the event. You will recieve an email with important access information for the gallery, so make sure you fill out the contact information sheet upon arriving at our studio on Friday. We may also post sneak peeks of our favorite images on our facebook page, where you are welcome to share them or use them on your page, as long as you do not crop the Be Photography logo.

I have had some questions about what your girls should wear or bring. This part is entirely up to you! You are welcome to bring dress up clothes, princess costumes, hats and scarves from your closet, pearls and costume jewelry, or nothing at all (the naked look is recommended only for children 1 and under). The goal is to have fun while making our girls feel beautiful and special. You are welcome to bring multiple outfits, and we will make suggestions as time allows, but clothing and make up will ultimately be your responsibility.

The event is open house style, so if it turns out that multiple girls are here at the same time, we will spend 5 minute intervals of shooting time in the studio before rotating out to the next "model". You are welcome to stay as long as you like, and get in line for multiple studio sessions, but the 5 minute time limit will ensure that everyone gets studio time with out having to wait too long. This will also give adequate opportunities for outfit changes and make up touch ups.

If you have any additional questions that we can answer, please post them here and we will answer them as best we can. We do ask that you do not bring other siblings unless absolutely necessary (for example, nursing moms). This will ensure that our event can be a special time with you and your little girls.

See you next Friday! Open house starts at 10am and ends at 3pm. Please arrive by 2:30pm to ensure adequate studio time.

Pregnancy is beautiful (as long as it's not me who's pregnant)! https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2014/5/pregnancy-is-beautiful-as-long-as-its-not-me-who-s-pregnant When I see pregnant mamas, I think they are just adorable! Especially my beautiful friend Kelley who I had the privlege of photographing over the weekend.

I was not one of those women who felt beautiful when I was pregnant though. In fact, quite the opposite! So my goal during maternity sessions is to make sure you feel as beautiful as possible, because pregnancy really is a beautiful thing! We here at Be Photography will do our best to pose you in the most flattering ways possible, and make the session fun and enjoyable.

I love this idea that Kelley brought with her to have the older siblings listen to baby with stethoscopes.

And the blue chevron Maxi dress was so flattering on her!

If you ever need help deciding what to wear for any of your sessions, please don't hesitate to give us a call or shoot us an email.

We also love to see your ideas for poses that you love, and we'll do our best to recreate them.

This was a pose that Kelley brought with her, so we ended our session outside trying our best to recreate it. The hand placement ended up being a lot more complicated than we imagined, but after a few tries and lots of laughs later, we ended up with this gorgeous image.

Thanks for the fun afternoon Kelley and letting me share your images on the blog! I can't wait to meet that sweet baby girl!

3 Months Old Already https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2014/5/3-months-old-already I can't believe my baby boy is already 3 months old! Today while the girls were having a play date at a friends house, I took the opportunity to snap a few quick pics of Mr. Handsome. I saw this idea on Pinterest and couldn't resist recreating it.... it's just so stinkin' cute!

Things started off all smiles....

Then he turned serious for a bit....

And eventually he let me know that he was all done with the photo shoot and was ready for a nap.

Remember, the studio is open and available! Is there an idea you've seen on Pinterest that you would love to recreate with your child? Give us a call or send and email and ask about our current studio specials!

Little Man https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2014/5/little-man I've been wanting to take this shot of my baby boy with my husband for a few weeks now and this morning the hubs finally had a few extra minutes to make it happen. This is my handsome little man at just over 11 weeks old. He's also on his 3rd night of sleeping 9+ hours, which makes for a very happy mama! I am also done with my maternity leave and back to booking full sessions, so if you're ready to get some family pictures done in the gorgeous spring outdoors, or need some fun updated studio shots of your kiddos, please don't hesitate to give us a call, drop an email, or click the "contact us" link on our website.

Something a little different (and yummy) in the studio today. https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2014/4/something-a-little-different-and-yummy-in-the-studio-today My friend Marcy Jo has started her own cookie business and recently asked me if I would take some pictures of her delicious creations. Being that I got to sample all the goods after photographing them, how could I say no? The Christmas cookies that we bought from her this past December were quite possibly the best cookies I've every tasted! This time around it was an adorable Easter theme. Here's a sampling of the beauties:

Hopefully she'll have a website up and running soon but in the mean time, if you'd like to order from her, you can contact her by email at rgriffith@molalla.net or by phone at 971.322.9329

New in 2014! https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2014/1/new-in-2014 This last year has made me realize how much I love seeing family portraits displayed in your homes! It's fun to watch children grow and change, and to give guests a glimpse into our past when they come to visit.

I know that most of you love having digital files from your portrait sessions, and in this era of technology that we are immersed in, I don't plan to take away that option. However, I do want to ensure that the investment that you make into a portrait session with Be Photography ensures that you come away with something tangible to display in your home. You will notice that our prices have increased slightly with the new year, but each price increase is accompanied dollar for dollar by a print credit that is included in your package price. This way, when you make the investment into your family photos, you can be sure that you are also budgeting for something other than a CD of images, that may or may not ever make it into an album or frame.

Along with this change, we will also be offering free design consultations with each and every package. If you would like, a design specialist will sit down with you and help you decide which images would look best displayed in your home. We hope you will see the value in these changes and look forward to providing you with excellent photography services in the years to come!

If you are looking for something classy, gorgeous, or even a little sexy for your upcoming maternity session, I highly recommend you check out this website! In fact, if you order an outfit from them for your session, and donate it to our studio when you're done, we'll take $50 off your session fee, or give you an additional $50 in print credit to use towards your order!

The first Cake Smash of 2014! https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2014/1/the-first-cake-smash-of-2014 Check out this little cutie pie that we had in the studio this week for her 1 year cake smash!

She wasn't quite as excited about the cake as we hoped she'd be so we had to bring in big brother for a little help!

I absolutely love the colors that her mom picked out for her session, and coincidentally, she's my cake provider, so if you'd like to book a cake smash session in 2014 and want something custom made, be sure to check out our Investment page and book your session early to ensure availability.

Studio Maternity Session https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2013/12/studio-maternity-session  We've added to our studio lighting recently, and I am so thrilled with the results it is producing in our studio images. Due to weather conditions last weekend, a maternity session I had booked with one of my favorite clients had to be moved indoors. Fortunately she was up for some experimenting, and the images that came out of her session were so gorgeous I had to share them here!

Exciting Announcments! https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2013/11/exciting-announcments All kinds of exciting things are happening at Be Photography this winter. The best of which involves the introduction of a new member of the Be team! Beth Owen is joining us as an assistant photographer (and hopefully future design consultant) and she brings with her a wealth of skills and experience.

Beth has been interested in photography her entire life. As a child you could regularly find her snapping pictures, with her purple camera, of anything that she could get to hold still long enough. As a teenager she would join the yearbook staff, and be introduced to digital photography and editing. In her adult years Beth has enjoyed photography as a hobby, many weekends have been spent toting a camera throughout the beautiful Pacific Northwest scouting places to capture that beauty. In winter of 2011 Beth decided to apply her passion for photography to a business, specializing in children, family, and professional portraits. Beth views the photos she captures as moments frozen in time, and she is blessed to share so many wonderful moments with the families that she photographs.

You will have a chance to meet Beth at this years Christmas Special, our next bit of exciting news! I had been wanting to run a Christmas special this year, but being almost 7 months pregnant had prevented me from putting one together. So Beth will be shooting this years pictures, and I will be there assisting and editing your images. Here are the details of this years special:

Ready to Pop! https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2013/10/test-photo

I took this photo almost a year ago of this beautiful mom to be, who also happens to be a great friend of mine, and my amazing hair dresser! Maybe it's the fact that she just did my hair the other day, or maybe it's the fact that my belly is starting to look like hers - but I was reminded of this photo today so I thought I would share it on the blog.

The Lifestyle Session https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2013/8/the-lifestyle-session Have you ever wanted to document your family just being you? Doing the things you love or the things that really make your kids smile, instead of getting dressed up and posing in a portrait studio against a plain black background? A "Lifestyle Session" might be just what you're looking for. Be Photography is excited to introduce this new concept in portrait photography to our growing line of packages. With a Lifestyle Session, we come to your house or your location of choice and spend up to two hours photographing you doing the things you love. Reading books with your kids, baking in the kitchen, sipping wine on the patio, or whatever else strikes your fancy. This type of session can tell a story about your family that regular portrait sessions can't. Although posed shots are an option during your session, the focus is more on capturing candid moments between you and your loved ones.

I had the privilege of photographing my first Lifestyle Session last week for some long time clients of ours.  Here is some of what we were able to capture:

We started out in Lena's room with story books and all her favorite stuffed animals. This room was especially fun for me to photograph since all the canvas prints hanging on her wall above the bed were pictures that I had taken of her.

We also did some fun shots in their gorgeous kitchen and then headed out to the back patio.

And then of course Lena had to do a little modeling for us - she is almost too cute for words!

Not only is a Lifestyle Session a great way to remember your family in photographs, it is also an excellent way to remember the home your kids grew up in, your favorite park to play at, or any other meaningful location of your choice.

The lifestyle package starts at $300 for the 2 hour session for up to 8 people. This includes your choice of 20 images on a disc with full copyright release. For just $100 more you can go with the Lifestyle Plus package, which comes with a 20 page professionally printed and bound photobook containing all your favorite images from your session. Since a lifestyle session essentially tells a story of your family in a photo journalistic fashion, this can be an excellent way to commemorate the session and makes an excellent gift for friends and family. Additional copies of the book can be purchased for $50 each.

More details about these and all the great packages that we offer can be found on our website at www.bephotographyoregon.com

The Be Family is Growing! https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2013/8/the-be-family-is-growing

We are excited to announce that we'll be adding one more member to our little family - due to arrive in mid-February! What does this mean for your family pictures this year? Well, we will still be doing our annual Fall Special, the weekend of October 5th and 6th, and we'll be booking sessions through the end of October, with a few openings into November. However, there will be no Christmas Special this year so if you need pictures for your Christmas Card, make sure to book a fall session soon before spots fill up! I will be taking December - April off to be with my family and welcome this new little blessing into our home. I just want to say thank you to each and every one of you for your support, love, and encouragement, which has allowed my passion to become a way to help support my family! I'm looking forward to fall pictures, especially all you seniors out there, and since I'm now in the 2nd tri-mester, the next three months should be smooth sailing!

A beautiful sunset maternity session... https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2013/7/a-beautiful-sunset-maternity-session I had the opportunity to take some beautiful maternity pictures for one of my favorite couples tonight. You might remember them from a couple of years ago when we photographed their gorgeous wedding.

Or maybe from last Christmas when they announced that a little one was on the way.

With less than a month left until they become a family of 3, I was honored to be able to capture some absolutely beautiful maternity moments with the lovely couple. Here are a few that were just too cute not to share!

We can't wait to meet your little guy on the outside very soon!

31 Day Photo Challenge https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2012/12/i-put-together-this-30-day-photography
I put together this 31 day photography challenge for a fellow photographer that I am mentoring, but thought I would share it here in case anyone else would like to participate. The purpose of the challenge is to get you more comfortable with your camera and what all the pre-set modes are capable of. It will hopefully also serve to spark your creativity and get you "out of the box" of the usual things you might take pictures of. At the end of the challenge, I would love to hear from you. I am asking specifically for three things you learned, and three questions that may have come up during the daily assignments. If you post your responses here, I will answer as many questions as I can. Thanks for stopping by my blog and may January be filled with many great photographs!

Announcing... https://www.bephotographyoregon.com/blog/2012/12/we-photographed-their-wedding-year-and We photographed their wedding a year and a half ago, and now, it is with great excitement and joy that we get to announce... they are having a baby! Here is what the lovely mom to be had to say on facebook:

"Two years ago on this day, the love of my life asked me to marry him, so it only seemed fitting to announce today that we are expecting our first little one next summer! :)"

With so many ideas coming from Pinterest these days, I'm happy to say that I thought of this cute one all on my own. I had seen the candy cane hearts before, but thought how cool it would be to have the heart around the new little baby growing in mommy's tummy. I just love how it turned out. Thanks to Jon and Holli for allowing me to photograph another special moment in your lives. I can't wait to meet the newest addition to your sweet little family!
